Unicef and Telenor for the children of Pakistan

August 30, 2010 – Unicef in Serbia and company Telenor initiated the action of raising funds for helping the children of Pakistan, by sending text messages.
Company Telenor, operating in Pakistan, opened a special line for sending text messages, worth 50 dinars without tax.
Close to 17 million people were directly hit by floods in Pakistan, out of which more than 2 million are children, younger than the age of 3. One fifth of Pakistan’s territory (size of Austria, Belgium and Switzerland all joined together) is under water. Dozens millions of people lost their homes, fear from spreading of epidemics looms. Due to the shortages of water and hygienic conditions, infectious diseases, such as diarrhea and cholera, present a threat, particularly for children.
Food, clean water, hygiene products, medical equipment and medicines are urgently needed.
Unicef staff in the field have been engaged to offer emergency aid. Around 2 million people are getting drinking water, via 490 enabled water systems through 510 tankers. Population in jeopardy is receiving hygiene sets, water canisters and highly nutritious meals.
