Telenor warns its customers not to answer text messages or return international calls if they are not sure about the identity of the caller because it is most likely a fraud.
“This type of fraud has been present in various parts of the world for years. Telenor, as well as other operators, is not able to block these messages and calls, and one of the main reasons is the fact that these always come from new numbers,” says Milan Nikolić, Corporate Security Director at Telenor.
Customers are randomly receiving SMSs mostly from rented equipment of unknown operators to various landline and mobile networks, and the calls are usually identified as missed calls. If the customers return the call from the unknown number, they are automatically charged with the establishing of the connection and call duration according to the standard tariff for the international tariff zone plan, and so they can run up a bill that is higher than usual.
