Telenor in Serbia first to offer WAC mobile applications
Telenor Serbia at World Mobile Congress
February 16, 2011 - Telenor Serbia is the first company within Telenor Group, which will enable downloading WAC (Wholesale Application Community) mobile applications. That pilot project has been presented at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona today.
The Wholesale Application Community is the initiative of the largest global mobile operators, united with app developers in developing the best possible offer.
“Telenor’s entrance into the world of applications is an exciting moment for us, making us one of the first mobile operators entering this wide range of applications to offer later this year. Now users of both smart and feature phones will be the first to download various content thanks to cooperation between Telenor Serbia, Ericsson and Opera. Following up on our experience, Telenor Group will make the application store available for other markets”, says Marek Slacik, Telenor Serbia’s Chief Marketing Officer.
Ericsson will provide the content management solution, while Opera will deliver the interface for the storefront on the mobile. Telenor’s WAC solutions platform – tStore – has been presented at the Ericsson stand at the Congress, and all visitors have had an opportunity to see how it functions.
The launch of the WAC pilot project in Serbia shows Telenor’s commitment to finding new solutions together with the WAC members and partners such as Ericsson. However, this project is not limited to the WAC only. The app store will also offer Android, Symbian and Java content to all participants.
The Wholesale Application Community is an organisation established to increase the overall market for mobile applications, allowing mobile software developers to more easily write applications usable on a variety of devices, operating systems and networks. The organisation has 48 members, mobile operators, and Telenor has been its active member since 2010.
Telenor will apply its experience from Serbia to implement the project at other markets where the company operates by end-2011 and in early 2012.
