Start Up Leskovac
Project for redecorating walls with murals in twelve towns in Serbia
October 5, 2007 – The painting of murals in the center of Leskovac marks the beginning the Start Up project, an initiative for improving and encouraging the development of cultural and art life in smaller towns in our country. This project, thanks to which 12 municipalities in Serbia will receive one mural each, was launched by the Telenor Foundation and the KIOSK nongovernmental organization, with support of municipalities and the Duga company.
Leskovac is the first municipality whose space will be dignified with a work of modern art, by author Milos Nusic. In the near future murals will also be painted in eleven other large municipalities in Serbia: Vranje, Zrenjanin, Kraljevo, Krusevac, Pancevo, Smederevo, Sremska Mitrovica, Uzice, Cacak, Subotica and Sabac. The goal is to show that these towns deserve the official status of city, as announced the Ministry of Public Administration and Local Self-Government.
The visual identity of the cities will be augmented by the works of 12 young artists that were selected in a competition. These are: Ana Kras, Aleksandra Petkovic, Isidora Nikolic, Krsh, Aleksandar Dimitrijevic, Igor Stanglicki and Sinisa Ilic. In their own way they will actively take part in visually improving public spaces and stimulating the art scene in these regions, directly contributing to the general image of our country.

“Cities are living organisms. They breathe, change, grow, and move. The drivers of economic development are companies and organizations which employ and enrich cities. These institutions, in cooperation with foundations, can also jump start a town in other ways, culturally as well as spiritually. The Telenor Foundation was founded precisely with this purpose in mind, to improve the life of local communities and their users, which is why it backed the Start Up project with great pleasure,” said Ana Krstic, the manager of the Telenor Foundation.
“Through artistic interventions in public spaces we are adding value to certain city structures. A street becomes a gallery, a wall becomes a canvas, and visual art becomes part of our everyday life, creating new views on things, encouraging thinking or simply improving our day. I am pleased that we have been given the opportunity to improve the living space for our fellow-citizens,” said Leskovac Municipal Mayor Vladan Marinkovic.
