SMS Mural in Sombor Downtown
Sombor, July 3, 2009 – A mural on the façade of a building in Čitaonička Street, painted by artist Marko Stojanović, has officially been presented in Sombor downtown today. Sombor has thus joined the cities which will be decorated with murals, within the “Start Up City” project of the Telenor Foundation.
The “Start Up City” project is a result of support to the decision of the Ministry of State Administration and Local Self-Management to grant the status of a city to large towns in Serbia. The project is implemented owing to cooperation of the Telenor Foundation and the Contemporary Art Platform Kiosk, supported by local authorities, the “Sombor Youth Boom” organisation and Duga company. The objective of the project is urban development of municipalities across Serbia, in the aim of presenting artworks of local authors to the general public.
The mural in Sombor, whose dimensions are 11.3x5.15 metres, presents a mobile phone screen, with a message containing precise coordinates of a location of the artist while painting the mural.
“There were many ideas and sketches before this painted one. The mural, which will be here for many years, tells us something about the moment of its creation. In other words, the mural talks about itself, i.e. it makes itself. An important detail of this SMS-mural is an optimistic text which ends with “Me, too… l”. I hope that it will remind passers-by of the fact that they have someone close to them ad motivate them to send a message” – says Stojanović, the mural author.
In the last two years, murals have been painted in Užice, Kraljevo, Leskovac, Vranje, Pančevo, Šabac, Loznica, Zrenjanin, Subotica, Zaječar, and several large municipalities in Serbia will obtain them as well.
“The aim of this project is to revive the local artistic scene and contribute to the decentralisation of cultural production. The Telenor Foundation was established in the aim of creating an environment where citizens would feel free to develop their creativity,” says Ana Krstić, manager of the Telenor Foundation.
In 2007, the Telenor Foundation and the Kiosk were awarded for their cooperation on the “Start Up City” project with the Bizart award, granted under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture of Serbia for the most successful partnership of the cultural and business sector.
Established in March 2007, the Telenor Foundation has so far supported more than 60 carefully selected projects in the area of culture, art, care about the youth, support to socially endangered groups, and will continue to improve the development of local communities through various projects.
