Launch of the project “Museum about the river on the river ” marked

Revitalisation works started with the symbolic raising of the funnel of the steamboat known as Titanic’s peer

February 8, 2014 – The start of works by which the steamboat “Župa” will be preserved from further deterioration and turned into exhibition space, symbolically started today. Telenor Foundation, Goethe Institute and the Museum of Science and Technology supported the project of its renovation, reconstruction and revitalisation, whilst the Cultural Institution “Parobrod” launched this initiative.

“Numerous educational, cultural artistic, ecological and entertainment programmes will be organised in the unusual space of the steamboat “Župa”. The plan is to implement cultural-educational activities intended for school-age children, but also all the young people interested in this type of project in cooperation with organisations active in ecology and cultural centres”, said Zlatko Crnogorac, Executive Producer of the project from the Cultural Institution “Parobrod”.

The steamboat “Župa” represents significant industrial heritage from the history of river traffic of Serbia and is under the protection of the Museum of Science and Technology. Currently, it’s in a very bad shape and organiser plans to make this facility ready for first exhibitions already in spring. A part of permanent layout will be dedicated to the history of the modern Serbian navigation and a part to the ship “Župa”, which marked its centennial anniversary in 2013.

The steamboat “Župa” was cleaned and opened for cultural events for the first time in 2012. The consequences of decades-long neglect will be removed and the ship protected from total ruin and sinking with technical works on the renovation and reconstructions. With the ship’s transformation into an exhibition space the city of Belgrade will get a new cultural-historical location, attractive for domestic and foreign visitors and river-lovers. Since on the entire catchment of rivers the Sava and the Danube there is no similar adequate purpose-specific facility which is not only intended for entertainment, the renovated steamship “Župa” will be a unique capital’s cultural facility on the water.
