A Bottle of Water, Fortitude, and a Smartphone: Wilderness Survival Kit

Over 150 participants in the Telenor Survival Race enjoyed a two-day adventure on Zlatar

Lovers of nature, adventures, and challenges tested their limits for the seventh consecutive year in the Telenor Survival Race, organized by Wild Serbia. In the middle of Zlatar’s pristine nature, more than 150 competitors tackled different challenges – from finding drinking water and starting a fire with a flint, to making shelters to spend the night in.

The Telenor Survival Race has three categories: Adventure, Survival and Family, made up of two- or four-member teams. The Adventure participants covered a distance of 30 kilometers and were allowed to use smartphones and mobile internet for orienting themselves, getting useful tips, and sharing their experiences from the wild part of Zlatar. Telenor also organized a bonus competition where the participants were tasked with finding hidden symbols and posting photos to Twitter, thanks to Telenor’s Smart Network and its good fast internet coverage on remote locations.

The “Mecici” team members Ana Milosavljević, Bojana Tomašević, and Dragan Sretenović managed to find, photograph, and post the most hidden items. This way they proved that the route can be passed with a smile, despite the challenges presented by the thick woods and untamed nature.

The best in the Survival category, who passed around 60 kilometers over two days and demonstrated superior nature skills, were Vlada Panić, Vladimir Ranković, and Dragan Stanković from the “Sinovi sume” team. They attested that fitness, mental resilience, and resourcefulness are prerequisite for surviving in tough conditions.

The most adept team in the Adventure category were the “Seljacine”, who won the highest score thanks to the resourcefulness they have been demonstrating at Survival Races for years.

In the showcase Family category, the youngest nature lovers also spent the night in tents, next to the fire, on a meadow near Vodena poljana.

Telenor secured fast internet access and good coverage along the entire route passed by the Adventure contenders. Telenor’s Smart Network currently covers 85% of Serbian population. An additional investment of 10 million over the next six months will provide fast internet coverage for the whole country, or 99% of the population. The 3G internet will be available wherever there is mobile phone service.
