Telenor Girls day

Belgrade, April 27, 2017 – Finals of the competition “Catch the idea”, organised by Association of Business Women of Serbia, with the support of Telenor Foundation, has its winners. The competition was held on the occasion of the marking of the International Girls in the ICT Day, with the aim of empowering girls in choosing their future professions, as well as stimulating them to be guided by their personal interests and talents when considering professional orientation.

“Creating equal opportunities for all is the foundation of our business, primarily by providing access to Internet, using the benefits of modern technologies and stimulating entrepreneurship. We believe that the industry of information-communication technology in Serbia has a potential to attract even more young cadres and that, through such initiatives, like the Girls in ICT Day, we can drive girls to opt for work in telecommunications. We are proud of the fact that over one half of Telenor employees are women, where 47 percent of women hold management positions”, said Marija Vujanić, Director of Communications and Sustainable Development in Telenor.

The competition finalists visited Telenor, talked to women in leading positions in this company and, in a workshop, practised how to present their ideas as successfully as possible.

“This year’s Telenor’s Girls day was organised in a sign of stimulating girls to creative, team thinking and expression through web technologies that are close to them, as well as presentation of entrepreneurial ideas. We were delighted by the received works and it wasn’t easy to select the winning team”, said Olivera Popović, Vice-President of the Association of Business Women of Serbia.

After presenting their ideas and tutorials, the jury selected winners and presented valuable awards. Students from the elementary school Đura Jakšić from Belgrade won the first place. They are Neda Kovačević, Maša Jović and Tijana Petrović and Telenor Foundation awarded them with smart phones.

The International Girls Day was traditionally marked by the companionship of over 1,000 girls from final grades of 60 elementary schools all over Serbia and successful women from over 70 companies. The project is implemented by: The Association of Business Women of Serbia, Telenor Foundation, Schneider Electric DOO, German organisation for international cooperation GIZ through two projects: Youth Employment Stimulation (YEP) and Reform of Secondary Professional Education in Serbia (VET), Office for the Youth Office,  Inventiva Centre, Ministry of Trade, Tourism and Telecommunications, Ministry of the Economy, Ministry of Youth and Sports, Coordinating Body for Gender Equality and SME Week.

The International Girls in ICT Day was established at the UN level and is marked every last Thursday in April. The Association of Business Women of Serbia first organized the Girls in ICT Day on April 28, 2011. In the past six year, in which the ABWS has been marking this day, over 8,000 girls went through the project, and the results show the interest of girls to recognize, through this kind of real meetings with entrepreneurs, entrepreneurship as a possible future place of employment.
