Support of Telenor Foundation to young with developmental disabilities

Belgrade, June 29, 2016 - Telenor Foundation and the Association for Supporting Developmentally Disabled “Our home” (Naša kuća) presented today a digital service, which will help young people with intellectual disabilities engaged on the project “Meals on Wheels”.

The project “Meals on Wheels” was created with the aim of providing employment for young people with intellectual disabilities. The young people who are working on this project provide daily hot meals, which are delivered to home addresses of the elderly, infirm and people with mobility problems, unable to prepare their own food. Within this project, 12 young people are currently employed, who deliver daily 80 hot meals and the plan is to employ another 10 people in the next two years.

Within the project a digital service was presented, which will help the young with intellectual disabilities recognise the banknotes and thus make it easier for them to carry out their daily activities.
“The young people with intellectual disabilities mostly have problems with recognising the value of banknotes and their proper use. This problem prevents then to live on their own and manage their budgets. The application we have developed, with the support of Telenor company, enables intellectually disabled to properly dispose of their own money on work days, as well as in their daily lives” said Anica Spasov, President of “Our Home” Association.

According to the official data, less than 3% of the disabled persons are employed, and that number mostly includes persons with physical and sensory disabilities. Development of digital applications provides a significant contribution to the expansion of the list of potential jobs which can be performed by persons with developmental disabilities.
The initiator of the project “Meals on Wheel” is the Association for Supporting Developmentally Disabled “Our Home” (Naša kuća). Activities of this Association are directed at developing employment programmes for members of vulnerable groups and provision of innovative social service through the model of social entrepreneurship.
