Energy efficiency and CO2 reduction
With a view to increasing energy efficiency, our Company is oriented towards lowering energy consumption and carbon dioxide emissions, through the initiatives “Green offices”, “Green network” and “Green miles”.
Through the initiative “Green offices” we want to establish “green thinking”, i.e. principles of reasonable use of energy and other resources in all facilities and all stages of construction and exploitation, from design and building, to adaptation and reconstructions of buildings.
Our aim is to significantly reduce the percentage of carbon dioxide emission, as by-product of used electrical and thermal energy by applying measures such as:
use of new materials with low thermal conductivity coefficient,
maximum adjustment of equipment and installations to user requests,
installing only the equipment with high energy use (class A),
regular maintenance of equipment and space.
The integral part of this initiative is also changing habits and behaviour of Telenor employees, since we are aware that we can significantly contribute to reduction of energy consumption. We do little things that contribute to energy savings, such as double side printing, turning off unnecessary lights, shutting windows and doors, setting thermostats to rational temperatures, etc.
Our telecommunications network accounts for around 80 percent of the total energy consumption of Telenor. Having this in mind, we apply all available new technology so as to improve energy efficiency and reduce the emission of carbon dioxide. Apart from the energy efficiency, which is one of the main criteria in the equipment selection process, we apply more efficient cooling systems and solutions for back-up battery recharge.
In late 2010 Telenor started complete renovation of its telecommunications network, i.e. its modernisation during which all base stations will be replaced with new, more energy efficient ones. New Smart network saves up to 30% of electrical energy compared to the previous one, with influence on the reduction of carbon dioxide emission and air pollution. The Smart network enables the application of latest technologies and use of devices that contribute to the more efficient use of resources, but also reduction of operating costs with the use of different tools and applications for exchanging information over mobile telephony and Internet.
Apart from measures for increasing energy efficiency within the network, Telenor supports the use of renewable energy sources. In June 2010, in a place called Pločica near Kovin, we have launched the first hybrid base station, which uses solar and wind energies. Apart from building in solar panels and wind-generators at the site, the installed special battery cooling system helps reduce the carbon dioxide emission and increase energy efficiency. Batteries are placed in a canal on the floor so that higher room temperatures are allowed, i.e. the cooling system works shorter.
Following the work of the hybrid base station has shown that renewable energy sources produce some 40% of total electrical energy necessary for the work of a base station, which reduces carbon dioxide emissions by 3 tons annually.
Through the “Green miles” initiative Telenor influences the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions by using company cars with the commercially available state-of-the-art engines which guarantee a low level of harmful gases emissions. Also, we organize trainings for safe and economic driving for our employees.
By using modern telecommunications tools for cooperation and exchange of information over mobile telephony and Internet, we influence the reduction in the number of company trips.
In order to raise awareness of the employees on the importance of influencing the environment, Telenor has provided a number of bicycles for transportation to and from work in Belgrade and regional centres in Niš and Novi Sad.
